The
College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) has a long history of
environmental research. In order to enhance the visibility of College
environmental research and educational programs and to create opportunities
for truly collaborative research, the College formed the Environment
Institute in 1998. The mission of the Institute is to:
- Promote interaction among faculty
and students with the diverse expertise needed to address the
environmental issues
- Act as a catalyst for College
and University in environmental research
- Provide leadership in new areas
of innovative, interdisciplinary research and education
The Institute works to develop initiatives
or centers that focus on compelling scientific, social and engineering
issues and problems that require the expertise of more than a single
researcher or even a single department. The expertise and strengths
of EMS academic departments provide the foundation for these interdisciplinary
initiatives and centers. The resources of the Environment Institute
are designed to create added opportunities for faculty and students
and to act as a catalyst for innovative, collaborative research.
