(n) A person who invokes the Endangered Species Act to preserve a natural area, typically a forest, against what is viewed by opponents as "progress." Culminating in the 1970's Snaildarter case, in which an entire Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) dam project was blocked by a specie of rare fish (the Snaildarter), the result has been backlash against the environmental movement and any environmental considerations in planning. Modern examples include the Spotted Owl of the Pacific Northwest. The Endangered Species Act is currently under consideration for revision, with ecosystems rather than species the focus of preservation.
